MASTERS IN SCIENCE DISCIPLINES

COSC 803: COMPUTER USE AND APPLICATION IN MATHEMATICS RESEARCH

COURSE PURPOSE: To equip students with skills that enable them to research with the help of a computer.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of the course, students should be able to;

  • Use a word processing program
  • Use a spreadsheet program for data tabulation and analysis
  • Prepare a powerpoint presentation
  • Use latex for referencing and document formatting
  • Use a spreadsheet excel for data tabulation and analysis
  • Use SPSS commands for data entry,manipulation and analysis
  • Use a web-browser and email software to access internet
  • Use a search engine to search for authoritative research content
  • {insert references for MATlab and mathematica}

COURSE CONTENT:

General introduction to microcomputers, operating systems, document formatting using word processors ,document presentation using presentation software,Documentation and referencing systems, Introduction to LaTex .Data tabulation and analysis using excel  spreadsheet and SPSS;graphs, sorting. Basic commands in SPSS for data entry, manipulation and analysis, testing hypothesis, parametric and non-parametric tests, multivariate analysis, factors analysis, description analysis and cluster analysis. Internet application in research; search engines and searching techniques, email and elearning systems.Introduction to MATlab and mathematica.
